Online Language Course
One of the increasingly popular methods for learning a foreign language is by taking language classes online. These online courses often combine vocabulary and grammar exercises and online tests. The goals of these courses vary, but many of them aim to provide students with basic fluency in the target language.
The advantages of learning a foreign language with an online course include the convenience involved. Students are able to make significant strides in their language learning without having to leave their homes or pay for travel costs. It is also true that there are often many more language choices in online course catalogs than in brick-and-mortar buildings. Students who want to learn Greek or Hindi, for instance, may not be able to find nearby course offerings. However, if they go online they will have more options to learn these languages. online language courses also offer students the flexibility to study when they want and take in the information provided by the course at their own pace.
A disadvantage with online foreign language courses is that the student has to be very self-motivated in order to make any progress. It depends on the format, but many times the student will need to push themselves to continue with the lessons. Some students, especially foreign language students, benefit from interacting with other students and with the instructor. While it’s true that most online foreign language classes do allow for at least some interaction with other students and with the instructor, the interaction is often reduced in the online environment compared to the face-to-face environment. Students who need more constant and consistent feedback may feel they are missing out if they embark on online courses.
While online language courses have definite strengths, it is also important for foreign language students to bear in mind their limitations. Students should be aware of their own needs and make a choice best suited for meeting those needs.
